Pick a place from 1990s India and it starts playing. Not a playlist with a photograph behind it. A room, with a clock on the wall that knows what time it is where you are.
The songs of that decade are not really songs to anyone who was there. They are moments. A barber's chair, a Sunday drawing room, a bus at night with one speaker rattling over the driver, the morning of the fifteenth of August. You do not remember the track listing. You remember where you were standing and how it felt.
So each theme here is built as a moment first. Somebody painted it, the screen inside it actually plays, and the clock carries the real Indian time. The music is what that moment would have been playing.
Sunday Doordarshan is a drawing room that follows the clock through the day, from the morning set that nobody switched on deliberately to the test card at midnight. Deluxe Saloon is a barbershop with the radio on and no schedule at all.
